A speed boat changes the shape of a Tiran day. Instead of a long sail out, you leave from Sharks Bay and reach the reef in roughly twenty minutes, which leaves more of the trip for being in the water rather than travelling to it.
The boat takes up to six people, so it is usually a family or a group of friends rather than a mixed crowd. Because the crossing is quick, the crew can move between sites during the day instead of committing to one route.
The main reason is time. A conventional boat spends a good part of the day sailing; a speed boat does not. That matters if you want two or three proper snorkelling stops rather than one long one, or if you are fitting the trip around other plans.
The second reason is the group size. Six people on a small boat feels very different from a full deck of passengers, and it means the crew can keep an eye on less confident swimmers.
This is a half-day trip rather than a full day, which is why it costs more per person than the shared cruise but takes much less of your time. Swimwear, a towel, sunscreen and a hat. There is very little shade on a speed boat, so the sun feels stronger than the wind suggests. Bring water. If you own a mask that fits you, bring it — a well-fitting mask makes more difference to a snorkelling day than any other piece of kit.
Pack light. Space on a six-person boat is limited, and anything you carry on will sit in the sun for the trip back.
The boat returns to Sharks Bay after the last stop, and your transfer back to the hotel is included. Most trips finish within about three hours of pickup, which leaves the rest of the day free.
